2003-09-06 - 4:15 p.m. Afternoon Play Station Northern Missouri days don’t get much better than this! We’ve had a high today of 78. The heat and humidity—and the annoying wind--we endured through most of the summer are gone. At least they have been for the past five days. It’s the kind of day that makes those of us in the Midwest appreciate the seasons of The Heartland. Still too warm for a fall football Saturday—although it would have been great fun to be in the stands today to watch the Iowa Hawkeyes play. My air conditioner is off and the windows are open for the first time in three months. The Brew Crew had assorted commitments today, so boating was put off until tomorrow when we’ll have breakfast on the boats and watch the swimmers race in the Tri-State Triathlon. I finished up what I had to do early this afternoon, then sat on the front porch and enjoyed a book. I’ve put a roast and potatoes on the grill rotisserie and brought my play station, a latte and a small box of Harry and David truffles to the deck (Yeah, yeah, I know, not exactly a Kitchen Remedy for Obesity!). A great afternoon to lounge around and play outside while the meat roasts.
Both dogs are even enjoying being outside today. For most of the summer Emma has refused to stay out longer than necessary to do her business, and Blue, who usually prefers to be in the yard during the day, didn’t linger long in the heat. Accompanying these pleasant days are evenings cool enough to feel fall in the air. Last night the air was pungent from campfires at the state park campgrounds about a mile south of here, a gentle reminder in a few short weeks I’d be stoking the fireplace and replacing iced tea—okay, Bud Light—with hot chocolate. Life is good!
