2003-09-21 - 8:01 a.m. Rock Graffiti These sandstone rocks show carvings (petroglyphs) of crosses, arrows, snakes and thunderbirds.
Unfortunately, before the Department of Natural Resources erected a shelter around them many were marred by contemporary artists proclaiming their everlasting love: “Jimmy + Susie Love Forever.” Those kinds of things.
Archaeologists think this area was once part of an ancient ceremonial ground used by Indians who inhabited the area as many as 1,500 years ago. When I was a kid, before the rules changed forcing campers into established campgrounds, we used to camp near these rocks. Dad would build a big campfire, Mom would roast marshmallows and I would gallop across the rocks with the Indians.
